Pidyon haben – Redeeming the son

Hi,
Well, we bought our son. He is officially ours .
OK, we didn’t buy him – only redeem him for money what called Pidyon haben. Back when the temple was still standing, the first born son was supposed to serve in it as a priest. But you could redeem him for a pretty large amount of money.

Atzva parents asked us to do this mitzvah, for they are religious. Atzva and I really didn’t care. Although some of our friends refused to take any part in this “Pagan ritual” as they call it. I look at it as a tradition and Atzva did it mainly to satisfy her parents.

I never been to one of those ritual and it was also new to Atzva parents and mine (None of them had a first born son). It starts when a Cohen asks the Aba and then the ima is it their first born son. “Yes” each of them have to say. “He is to serve as a priest in temple, would you like to redeem him?”. The Aba says yes, give the Cohen 5 shekels and say a pray for his son.

At least that’s what we did. Our friends told us how the Cohen “refuse” to take only five shekels and then the friends and the family have to add gold and silver jewellery until the Cohen is “satisfied” and release they boy from priesthood.
