Hi,
Our baby already have a name – Jannaeus , but the name of my friend’s new baby made me think about the all “pick a name” thing. And of course to tell you how we choose our baby name
You start by throwing names and reject them for different reasons.
There are names that just sound bad in other languages. Yoni in Hindu means dick , but you should thing about English. Dror (sound like drawer), Yam (sea in Hebrew), Nimrod, Sagi and other are names you should think about.
Then it start rejecting all the names that remind you people you don’t like, and because of the way the Israeli society is built there are a lot of those: from the neighborhood, from school, from high school, from the army, from the trip after the army, from the university….
Than when you have a name we started using it, to see how it fits. Can you yell at him? what does it rimes with? what will be his nickname? You basically testing it .
Now, that you have a name you have to keep it a secret. In Judaism you give a male baby a name only in the Brit milah that takes place eight days after the delivery. You can write the baby name down in the hospital, 24 hours after the birth. Either way till the birth everybody will try to convince you to tell them the name – some from pure curiosity, other because they want to have a say. Yep, people, mainly family members, think they now best what will be you baby name (“I thought you will call him after my late father….”). So my advice is just to keep it a secret until it is a complete fact
Take Care
