Secondary static scheme holding the building hit by a rocket in Beer Sheva

Rockets, Buildings and Secondary static scheme

Hi,

I know people from Beer Sheva, but now when Fatma (my little sister) started learning over there it became much more personal. 😕

Today Hamas went up another step and shot 2 rockets – one fell in the sea near Tel-Aviv and the another hit a private house in Be’er Sheva. The woman and 3 kids living in the house were lightly injured.

From construction point of view the building got hit didn’t collapse. Although some of building columns were damaged seriously the slabs still standing. That is due to the secondary static scheme. As construction engineers we design a the main static according to calculations and code. There is demand for redundancy in buildings design, in case some elements will fail (in Israel that can happen in war or in terror attack) But there are many other elements that can handle forces and loads. We cannot take those into account, but they can create a secondary static scheme standing up.

Till now things didn’t really change since the last time I wrote you about the Israeli-Palestinian around Gaza strip.

Well did change a bit – the demonstrations along the border are now at night time. Hamas uses the night and the smoke from tires it lit for its terror activity: laying explosives, sniper shots, penetrating the border fence, lit up IDF posts… Night time also means that it is harder for IDF soldiers on the fence to recognize unarmed innocent civilians among the crowd.

An average of couple Palestinians are shot to death on each night.

Along with, they keep sending off terror balloons (balloons with explosives). The balloons are getting pretty far: Lod, Yafit (near the Jordanian border), Jerusalem and more

Take care
Gad

At the time the rocket was fired, I wasn’t far away and watched the lightning storm. Later Hamas will claim the lightnings caused the rocket to be fired.
