Hi,
As I love to do during winter time I have opened IMS (Israel meteorological service) rain radar and show that cloudburst about to hit us.
I just came back from 7 mills over the Yarkon river. Atzva felt bad and asked for another hour of sleep. I took Jannaeus, Mindal and Xuxa had a morning walk which end up in 7 mills when it started raining.
The picture on the screen showed a massive amount of rain will soon hit Tel Aviv area, mainly north of it.
See the red area just on the coast? That is what hit Tel-Aviv
And it did. It was raining for hours in North Tel Aviv when we start to get movies and pictures from South Tel Aviv. The cloudburst that hit was one the extreme in the history of Israel: 79 mm of rain in only two hours! 67mm of those fell in only one hour!
For proportion, Wikipedia claims that the record of rainfall per an hour is 250mm per an hour. Far above what we had. But this is for Tropic climate, as the rest of the records for cloudbursts.
South Tel Aviv is known for it bad drainage, due to years of low municipal investment in Infrastructure in this part of town. Floods in this area of the city is common every winter, not to talk about cloudburst that we had. But this event with the situation of the facilities is a recipe for a massive failure….
Take care
Gad
