30 years to Gulf War

Hi,
It is already 30 years for Gulf war. To be precise to land part of it (Operation Desert Storm), which is the relevant part for us in Israel. From that time on a Scud missiles has started to land here. I am old enough to remember that time, as I was six years old. Well not much but still.

The main issue here was the fear was that those Scud missiles will have Nuclear, Biologic or Chemical warheads.

All Israel citizens has been issued gas masks, and most people still have those stuck in the Boydem or in storage. I refused to put my gas mask as we . The picture of my all family with gas masks looking like aliens is still stuck in my head.

We all been ordered to create a Sealed Room (Heder Atom) and to stay there once an alert of a Scud missile launch. We had wet cloth under the door and a plastic sheet over the window and tapes on it. My and Nathan room was chosen to use as one and we spent many hours waiting for the calm down announcement.

The order to get into the Sealed Room and put on the masks was nicknamed Vapor Snake (Nahash Tzefa), like the situation is not stressful enough. Since then we been practicing in this missile and rockets launching alert many times (it is now called Color Red – Tzeva Adom).

The war ended up around Purim, the holiday of costumes (and costume parties) in Israel. We came back to school with a costume and the gas mask. We have painted and decorate the gas mask box so it will easier for us to handle with the situation. There was one covered with Zbeng comics papers.

There were also trading cards, stickers and sticker album of the Gulf war, just like the one we had for 1990 world cup a year before. But instead of soccer players this was full of weapons, armored vehicles, tanks, aircraft etc. And of course the generals of the armies.

And those scud missiles did hit. Lucky us none had non-conventional war head, except those with concrete warhead 🙂. 14 people had died from those hits (among those: Shara Masheli,  Eitan Grondland,  and Uziel Friman). About 229 were injured directly, 530 had panic attack and 222 were injured from mistakenly  Atropine injections.

One scud fell near my Saba and Savta house in Bnei Barak as they were mostly aimed at Tel-Aviv. I think later on we went looking at it as an attraction.

Take Care
Gad
