Hi,
When the siren of Remembrance Day for the Fallen Soldiers of Israel and Victims of Terrorism is heard in Israel, all stands still.
l used to look at the people acting normal just before the siren heared as acting in a bit of dishonor. I prepare for it – thinking where will I stand and how.
But maybe I am the one who misses the idea behind the siren. Maybe you should be acting as normal before the siren, just as the fallen soldiers were acting when their lifes had suddenly stopped.
Acting nornal just as the bereavement families were acting normal when their life had suddenly stopped and changed completely when they got the news about their fallen son (or brother, mother, father, etc…)
I however open the radio in the morning before to hear the stories of the fallen soldiers and the victims of terror and aware of the siren (the broadcaster announces on the siren in advance). The night before, I watched the ceremony (we used to go to the ceremony in the neighborhood, but the kids had to sleep at that time).
When we were on school, those were much more intensive days (as well as the Holocaust remember day) – we had the ceremony on school and we spent the week before preparing the ceremony for the scouts. You did not have to think how to honor the fallen, the schedule and the content were clear unlike today.
Take Care
Gad
