Yehudit bridge opening 🌉

Hi,

After almost one year of assembling, and half a year of political crisis – Yehudit bridge is open for pedestrian traffic 🙂

The bridge is 110m long in one span 😱 over Ayalon Highway, an arch was choose to cover this length (15 meter high).

It made of about 1,400 tons of steel, not a lot less than the 2,200 ton construction I design in the factory in the south.

The idea behind the bridge to connect the part of the Tel Aviv metropolin stretching on both side of Ayalon highway (which was build on Ayalon stream). There are many car bridges between two parts of the city and pedestrians can use them. Those were built for vehicles and crossing them will usually lead you to car junctions you have cross waiting in the sun or on the rain. Second crossing those might not be easy as one that cross the Shalom bridge can say – the sidewalks are packed with people waiting for buses, entering and going out of the Shalom train station.

The bridge is not perfect but might be the first step toward desinging and building the city for pedestrians and bikers other than cars.

The bridge was built by lifting up 6 elements of steel, for each the Ayalon Highway had to be closed and for that Friday night were chosen. First the two parts of the lower chord were assembled (rusting on temporary steel formwork that stood in Ayalon stream). Later on the 2 elements of the main arch were installed. The last 2 elements were put together for the other arch. Then the formwork was demented and the deck of the bridge was built.
