Nahabir (Old Be’eri) – 239th day of war

Hi,
Nahabir is the original location of Kibbutz Be’eri, which was founded in October 6th 1946 in the night after Yum Kippur.

It was of 11 settlements which were founded in this night to extended the Jewish settlement in the western Negev before the establishment of state of Israel (the 11 points in the Negev)

Kibbutz Be’eri buildings that still stands in its original location in Nahabir: the security building and the water tower. A fighting tunnel can also be seen in the place. It was used during the Independence War once the defenders understood it will be safer in the tunnel, then in the building or the tower.

The Kibbutz moved to its current location (only 3 km away southeast to Nahabir) after the Independence War due to its proximity to the border and the fields that proven to have low yield.

The members of the Kibbutz moved the wood and metal buildings to the new location, leaving behind the security building and the water tower which were casted from concrete.

The convoies that enter us into Gaza strip, going out from the parking lot just outside Kibbutz Be’eri. We passing through this point as we entering the strip.

The site is planed to be a museum for the 11 points in Negev operation (the plan is here in Hebrew). But at the moment the building and the water tower are closed and inaccessible.

Take Care
Gad

The same building plan was used in many of the 11 points settlements.

The security building with the two guarding positions on top (what got its the nickname - Mickey Mouse). The building used to host the smal amount of weapon, ammunition and medical equipment the Kibbutz had. It proved strong to hols against light weapon (as the many bolt holes shows) but not against the heavy weaponry the Arab countries armies used.
