17th week of protests

Hi,
This is the 17th week in a row of protests around Israel against the judicial reform (or better call it the judicial overhaul).

For the first time, afyer 17th week of protests, the side supporting the reform (meaning the government) had arranged a massive protest (there was a small one coulle of months ago) gathering the support in Jerusalem and calling it the One Million March.

The numbers of the people that stood there are ranging from 200K to 500K. And that is, of course, depending on which side you are. But however you are looking at it, it was not the one Million March that was promised (in a country with about 10 million people, it means 10% would have been there).

Playing with the numbers and how much had gathered was a discussion ever since the protests had begun. When some say there are more and the other says there are fewer people on the street against the reform. This always depends on which side you are – with or agains the reform.

Even when you leave a side politician and the news media and left only with the police estimation, people still claim she choose a side and the number are always with the protests against the reform and never with it.

It seems like the protest with the reform in Jerusalem on Thursday had about the same number of people, like the protest on Sabbath evening. With two big differences: the first is the fact that the one against the reform was a single time event, while rhose against are a weekly event for 17 weeks in a row. The second difference is that the protests against the reform are spread around Israel, and there are about the same amount of people protests outside of Kaplan as there are in the main protest in Kaplan.

The protest in Jerusalem did a very bad show of how would leave here if the reform would pass: when the main presentation was how the faces of the Bagatz (Israel Supreme court) judges were printed and layed on the ground and the protestors marching on it – a clear comparison to how Iran handles and we might leave.

The Ultra-Orthodox did not join the pro-reform protest. What could have increased the number of protestors in this million protest. They probably made their estimation if the reform will hurt their autonomy or not. Maybe they did not want to go against the left wing, hoping they would be part of the other government if it would be made by the left wing.

Take care
Gad
